Abstract
This article examines the sociolinguistic aspect of non-verbal communication with particular emphasis on the system of paralinguistic means (PLM) as a complex, multidimensional, and polyfunctional phenomenon. Drawing on the theoretical foundations of sociolinguistics and paralinguistics, the study analyzes the influence of key social factors—such as age, gender, social and professional status, education, and cultural norms—on verbal and non-verbal communicative behavior. Special attention is paid to age and gender as significant sociolinguistic variables that determine the choice, frequency, and degree of expressiveness of paralinguistic means, including gestures, facial expressions, and prosodic features. The article demonstrates that while paralinguistic means are universal in nature due to their biological and physiological basis, their realization is culturally specific and socially conditioned. The findings highlight that successful communication requires consideration of sociocultural and sociolinguistic parameters that regulate both speech and non-speech behavior of communicants. The results of the study contribute to a deeper understanding of non-verbal communication as an integral component of social interaction and may be applied in sociolinguistics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, and intercultural communication studies.
