Abstract
Military command speech represents a highly conventionalized and function-oriented form of communication in which prosodic features play a decisive pragmatic role. Among these features, loudness and tempo function as primary phonopragmatic markers that ensure the successful transmission and execution of commands in high-stakes, time-sensitive environments. Loudness in military commands is not merely a physiological amplification of voice but a pragmatic strategy used to signal authority, urgency, and hierarchical dominance. Elevated loudness levels reinforce the illocutionary force of commands, minimize ambiguity, and facilitate comprehension in acoustically challenging contexts such as battlefields, training grounds, or emergency operations. Tempo, on the other hand, regulates the cognitive processing of commands and directly influences their perlocutionary effect. A fast tempo typically conveys urgency, immediacy, and operational pressure, prompting rapid responses from subordinates, whereas a controlled or slowed tempo may indicate procedural importance, caution, or the need for precise execution. The strategic manipulation of tempo allows commanders to manage attention, synchronize group actions, and maintain operational discipline. From a pragmatic perspective, the interaction between loudness and tempo enhances the effectiveness of command speech acts by aligning prosodic form with communicative intent.
