Abstract
This study investigates the presence and function of politeness strategies and maxims in selected translations of the Qur`an. Religious texts such as the Qur`an employ highly respectful, emotionally balanced and ethically guided communication aimed at instructing, comforting and guiding the believers. By applying a linguopragmatic approach the research examines how translators employ positive and negative politeness strategies to convey respect, humility and social norms inherent the source text. The study also investigates the influence of Leech`s and Brown & Levinson`s politeness theories on translation choices. Findings suggest that translator`s decisions significantly impact reader`s perception of politeness, interpersonal relationships and cultural nuances. The study contributes to a better understanding of cross-linguistic politeness realization in religious discourse. Drawing primarily on Brown and Levinson`s (1987) politeness theory, complemented by Leech`s (1983) maxims and Goffman`s (1967) concept of face, the research examines how Qur`anic discourse employs strategies such as indirectness, mitigation, honorifics and vocatives to navigate diverse communicative texts. The study seeks to demonstrate that politeness in Qur`an is not merely a social convention but a deliberate feature of divine communication, offering a model for ethical discourse in both religious and intercultural contexts.
